Dow Dental College conducts oral health screening for schoolchildren
KARACHI: The Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry at Dow Dental College (DDC) organized an oral health screening programme for schoolchildren at Kotwal Government School under the supervision of Dr. Adnan Sukkarwalla, with support from lecturers Dr. Gohar, Dr. Rida, and Dr. Amber Saeed.
The initiative aimed to promote oral hygiene awareness among children and educate them about the importance of maintaining good dental health from an early age.
During the interactive session, third-year BDS students conducted clinical examinations and educated students about the fundamentals of oral hygiene. Using dental models and educational charts, they demonstrated proper brushing and flossing techniques to help prevent dental caries, plaque, and gum disease.
The students also highlighted the difference between healthy and unhealthy food choices and their effects on teeth and gums, reinforcing the importance of balanced nutrition for maintaining strong oral health.
Each participating schoolchild received a comprehensive intra-oral examination, during which cases of dental caries, plaque, and staining were identified and recorded for follow-up care.
Before concluding the session, dental care kits containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, and a brushing chart were distributed among the students. The activity aimed to encourage regular oral hygiene practices and motivate the children to apply their newly learned skills daily.
The oral health screening programme reflects Dow Dental College’s commitment to community-based health education and its mission to raise awareness about preventive dental care among underserved populations.
