KARACHI: In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, growing patient expectations, and evolving treatment philosophies, the need for continuing professional development in dentistry has become more important than ever. Against this backdrop, the Pakistan Prosthodontics Association (PPA) successfully organized its 12th PPA Symposium at Bahria Dental College, Bahria University Health Sciences Campus Karachi (BUHSC-K), bringing together more than 300 prosthodontists, postgraduate residents, faculty members, undergraduate students, and dental professionals from across Pakistan.
The scientific gathering served as a national platform for academic exchange, evidence-based learning, and discussions on the future of prosthodontic education and clinical practice.
The symposium was held under the leadership of PPA President Dr. Syed Murtaza Raza Kazmi and Patron-in-Chief Prof. Dr. Nazia Yazdanie, reflecting the association's ongoing commitment to strengthening prosthodontic education and promoting excellence in patient care.
The successful organization of the event was made possible through the support of Vice Admiral (R) Ather Mukhtar, HI(M), Director General, Bahria University Health Sciences Campus Karachi, whose continued emphasis on academic excellence and professional development has contributed significantly to advancing dental education in Pakistan.
The event also received support from Prof. Dr. Saman Hakeem, Head of the Department of Prosthodontics at BUHSC-K, and Prof. Dr. Kashif Naqvi, Principal of Bahria Dental College, whose efforts helped facilitate the scientific gathering.
Focus on postgraduate prosthodontic training
The symposium commenced with an address by Prof. Dr. Nazia Yazdanie, who provided participants with an overview of the current status of prosthodontics residency training in Pakistan.
Her presentation examined the evolution of postgraduate programs, changing expectations of specialty training, and the opportunities and challenges facing future prosthodontists.
One of the highlights of the symposium was a session by Dr. Fahad Umer, who explored the emerging role of artificial intelligence in dental education. His presentation discussed the applications of AI in teaching, assessment, clinical decision-making, and digital learning environments, highlighting how technology is reshaping the future of healthcare education.
Implant dentistry and digital workflows take center stage
Contemporary developments in implant and restorative dentistry formed a major component of the scientific program.
Expert lectures on Dental Implantology, Sinus Augmentation, Implant Prosthetics, and Digital Prosthodontics were delivered by Dr. Taimur Khalid, Dr. Irfan Qureshi, Prof. Dr. Hina Zafar Raja, Dr. Ninnette Banday, and Dr. Munis Mukhtar.
The sessions provided participants with evidence-based insights into treatment planning, digital workflows, implant rehabilitation, and emerging technologies transforming prosthodontic practice.
Special recognition was accorded to Dr. Ninnette Banday, who traveled to Pakistan to participate in the symposium and contribute to the scientific discussions.
Experts stress the importance of occlusion
A notable segment of the symposium focused on occlusion, an area considered fundamental to long-term restorative success.
Leading educators and clinicians, including Prof. Dr. Nasir Shah, Dr. Najeeb Saad, and Dr. Kashif Aslam, highlighted the significance of occlusal principles in diagnosis, treatment planning, prosthesis design, and maintenance of oral function.
The speakers emphasized that neglecting occlusal considerations can compromise treatment outcomes and stressed the need for a comprehensive understanding of occlusal concepts to ensure predictable and sustainable rehabilitation.
Addressing challenges in prosthodontics residency training
The academic program concluded with a panel discussion titled "Challenges in Prosthodontics Residency Training in Pakistan," chaired by Prof. Dr. Nazia Yazdanie.
The panel featured Prof. Dr. Nasir Shah, Dr. Muneeb Ahmed Lone, Dr. Bharat Kumar, Prof. Dr. Mehmood Hussain, Dr. Saman Hakeem, and Dr. Bilal Shaikh, who discussed issues affecting postgraduate education, including curriculum development, clinical exposure, mentorship, research opportunities, assessment standards, and the future direction of specialty training.
Participants described the session as particularly valuable for young clinicians and residents seeking guidance regarding career development and evolving expectations within the specialty.
Collaboration, leadership and continuing dental education
The scientific program was coordinated by Dr. Sameer Qureshi, while registrations and organizational affairs were managed under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Mehmood Hussain.
Special appreciation was extended to Dr. Shahrukh Ali Khan, Dr. Sadiq Billoo, Dr. Muhammad Rameez, and Dr. Osama Yaseen for their voluntary contributions toward facilitating the symposium.
