ABBOTTABAD: In a significant step toward promoting pediatric oral health, the Department of Community Dentistry at Abbottabad International Dental College (AIDC) successfully organized a free school dental camp at The Educators School – Junior Campus, screening over 400 children and raising awareness on oral hygiene.

Under the expert supervision of Dr. Qurat-ul-Ain, Head of the Department, the event highlighted the college’s commitment to community dental outreach and preventive oral healthcare for children. Faculty members Dr. Muzhna and Dr. Umaiya, along with second-year BDS students, participated actively in this initiative.

The children, ranging from Playgroup to Grade 5, were individually screened for common dental issues, including cavities, gum diseases, and oral hygiene status. The camp provided a much-needed opportunity to detect early signs of dental problems in young children—many of whom had never had a dental check-up before.

Promoting preventive dental care through education

In addition to screening, the team emphasized oral hygiene education through age-appropriate activities designed to make dental care engaging and understandable for young students.

  • Brushing demonstrations: Children were taught the correct brushing technique using live demonstrations, highlighting the importance of brushing twice a day and using fluoride toothpaste.
  • Interactive learning: Posters and 3D dental models were used to make the sessions visually engaging, reinforcing key habits like reducing sugary snacks and regular dental visits.

The camp served a dual purpose—early detection of oral issues and building lifelong healthy habits. The school administration praised the initiative, noting its positive impact on students’ awareness and attitudes toward oral health.

Real-world learning for future dentists

For the dental students of AIDC, the camp provided invaluable field experience and an opportunity to connect academic learning with community engagement. Events like these demonstrate how future dental professionals can contribute meaningfully to public health awareness and early prevention of oral diseases.

Appreciation and collaboration

The Department of Community Dentistry extended its sincere thanks to the management of The Educators School – Junior Campus, Abbottabad, for their cooperation in facilitating the event and supporting this public health effort.
