FAISALABAD: Dental education extends far beyond textbooks, lectures, and clinical procedures. Recognizing the importance of creativity, empathy, and reflective learning in shaping future oral healthcare professionals, the Dental College of the University Medical & Dental College (UMDC) organized a photo essay competition titled “Smiles That Inspire,” bringing together students, faculty members, and distinguished guests for a celebration of storytelling and the human side of dentistry.

Held under the patronage and leadership of Prof. Dr. Mian Farrukh Imran, Principal of Dental College UMDC, the event showcased how artistic expression and healthcare education can complement one another to nurture compassionate and well-rounded clinicians.

A platform where dentistry meets storytelling

The competition was organized by the Department of Dental Education under the leadership of Assistant Professor Dr. Fatima Amin, Director of Dental Education, whose efforts, along with the support of faculty members from various departments, helped transform the initiative into a memorable academic event.

Organizers described the competition as an opportunity for students and faculty members to present their perspectives on oral healthcare through photographs and narratives, highlighting the experiences, emotions, and human connections that lie at the heart of the dental profession.

According to the organizers, the event reflected the spirit of teamwork, creativity, and academic excellence that Dental College UMDC seeks to promote.

Promoting reflective learning in dental education

Medical education experts increasingly emphasize the importance of reflective learning and creative engagement in healthcare training. While technical skills remain fundamental, educational institutions worldwide are recognizing that empathy, communication, professionalism, and patient-centered care are equally essential attributes for future healthcare professionals.

Through photography and storytelling, participants were encouraged to explore the broader meaning of oral healthcare and appreciate the experiences and emotions associated with every smile.

Educational activities that encourage creativity are increasingly being incorporated into dental curricula around the world as part of efforts to produce clinicians capable of combining scientific knowledge with compassion and social awareness.

The event attracted several prominent figures from the fields of medicine, dentistry, and health professions education.

Among those attending were Prof. Dr. Amanullah Malik, Rector of The University of Faisalabad (TUF); Prof. Amir Ali Chaudhary, Head of Ophthalmology; Dr. Tahmasub Faraz Tayyab, Principal of Niazi Dental College; Associate Professor Dr. Hina Barkaat from Community Dentistry, Niazi Dental College; Associate Professor Dr. Waqas Rashid; Prof. Dr. Sumera Badar Ehsan, a public health and medical education expert; Dr. Raheela Gauhar, a UK-based general practitioner; Dr. Noor-i-Kiran, Head of Medical Education at ABWA Medical College; and Dr. Taimur-ul-Hassan, Head of Medical Education at IMDC.

Their presence underscored the growing recognition of innovative and student-centered approaches in health professions education.

Beyond clinical skills: nurturing compassionate dentists

Modern dental education is increasingly moving toward producing professionals who are not only technically competent but also capable of understanding the human experiences associated with health and illness.

Organizers noted that initiatives such as “Smiles That Inspire” help students develop broader perspectives while encouraging self-expression, collaboration, and appreciation for the role empathy plays in patient care.

The event also highlighted UMDC’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and creating opportunities that encourage students to think beyond clinical procedures and connect with the personal stories behind every smile.

Building future-ready healthcare professionals

As dental education continues to evolve, educators are placing greater emphasis on holistic development, creativity, and interdisciplinary learning.

Events that combine art, communication, and healthcare are increasingly viewed as valuable tools for cultivating emotionally intelligent clinicians who can deliver patient-centered care in a rapidly changing healthcare environment.

By celebrating creativity alongside scientific excellence, Dental College UMDC reaffirmed its commitment to preparing future dentists who possess not only technical expertise but also empathy, perspective, and a deeper understanding of the people they serve.
