Survey shows AI tools nearly matching primary care referrals in healthcare provider selection
Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are rapidly emerging as one of the most influential factors in how patients select healthcare providers, according to a June 2025 survey by U.S.-based healthcare analytics company Rater8.
The survey revealed that 26% of patients said AI tools — including AI-generated review summaries and conversational assistants like ChatGPT — directly influenced their provider choice. This places AI almost on par with primary care referrals (28%), a long-standing and trusted source for patients seeking new doctors.
Meanwhile, recommendations from family and friends remained the most dominant factor (44%), underscoring the continuing importance of personal trust and word-of-mouth in healthcare decisions.
AI as a growing trust factor in healthcare
Rater8’s findings highlight a major shift in patient behavior: digital platforms and AI-driven tools are now playing nearly as critical a role as traditional referral pathways. With the rapid adoption of AI chatbots, search algorithms, and smart review systems, patients are increasingly blending human recommendations with machine-generated insights.
Healthcare experts believe that this shift could reshape the patient journey, making online transparency, physician reviews, and AI-powered summaries more central to how hospitals and doctors attract patients.
What it means for healthcare providers
The growing reliance on AI tools signals that providers must adapt their digital presence and reputation management strategies. From maintaining up-to-date online profiles to ensuring accurate reviews and embracing AI-driven engagement, hospitals and clinics face rising pressure to meet patients where they are searching.
“Patients are clearly signaling that they want both human trust and digital intelligence to guide their healthcare choices,” the survey noted, calling it a pivotal moment for the industry.
As healthcare continues to digitize, the balance between AI guidance, personal recommendations, and physician referrals may define the future of patient decision-making.
