Hands-on workshop on periodontology enhances clinical skills at IADSR

Hands-on workshop on periodontology held at IADSR

LAHORE: The Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR) recently conducted a comprehensive two-day hands-on workshop on periodontology as part of the IADSR 19th Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD). The workshop aimed to strengthen participants’ clinical competence in periodontal diagnosis, surgical decision-making, and evidence-based management.

The session was facilitated by Dr Farheen Qureshi (BDS; MCPS Perio; FCPS Perio; CHPE; MFDS RCPS Glasg), associate professor, department of periodontology and implantology, FMH College of Medicine and Dentistry. Her extensive academic and clinical expertise added significant value to the training.

Understanding periodontal disease, diagnostic accuracy

Dr Farheen explained in detail the recognition of periodontal disease, its signs, symptoms, and the appropriate selection and use of periodontal probes. Participants learned to differentiate between gingivitis and periodontitis, ensuring better diagnostic clarity during patient assessment.

She also demonstrated the effective use of periodontal probes, including measuring pocket depth and detecting early clinical signs of periodontal involvement.

Comprehensive overview of periodontal procedures

The workshop covered a wide range of essential topics, including:

  • Types and indications of periodontal surgeries
  • Understanding furcation involvement and its management
  • Surgical and non-surgical management of periodontal disease
  • Regenerative therapy and guided tissue regeneration
  • Bone grafting procedures and gingivectomy
  • Periodontal-restorative interactions and the ferrule effect
  • Periodontal flap surgeries and clinical decision-making
  • Focus on periodontal esthetics and clinical application

Participants also gained insights into periodontal esthetics, including principles of smile design and factors contributing to a gummy smile. Dr Farheen discussed clinical approaches used to enhance periodontal esthetic outcomes.

To promote practical understanding, participants were assigned two case studies, encouraging them to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world clinical scenarios.

Hands-on training to strengthen surgical skills

The practical component of the workshop included surgical periodontal procedures and crown lengthening exercises, performed on typodont models. Dr Farheen addressed participants’ queries, resolved challenges encountered during procedures, and provided individualized clinical guidance.

The workshop concluded successfully with participants achieving the desired learning objectives and gaining confidence in executing periodontal procedures with improved precision.
