SOD-SZABMU Department of Community Dentistry leads oral health campaign in Islamabad schools
ISLAMABAD: The Department of Community Dentistry, School Of Dentistry, Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SOD, SZABMU), recently organized four successful community school visits as part of the 2nd Year BDS curriculum for the academic year 2025.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, the community dentistry team conducted more than 1,600 oral health check-ups across Islamabad Model Schools and Colleges, including the G-8/4 sector and PIMS campus.

Potential findings revealed a high prevalence of dental caries, particularly among boys in the mixed dentition stage, as well as poor oral hygiene indicators such as visible plaque, calculus, and staining.
Students from primary to college level benefited from:
- Preventive screenings and oral health education
- Referrals for free treatment at the outpatient department (OPD) of SOD
- Personalized feedback shared with school principals
Highlighted cases were referred to the university’s dental hospital to ensure proper follow-up care for underprivileged students, closing the loop between screening, treatment, and health outcomes.
This initiative was led by the Department of Community Dentistry under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Farooq Ahmed Choudhary (HOD), Assistant Prof. Dr. Nighat Zia, and demonstrators Dr. Mohsin Javaid and Dr. Mawra Haider.
Speaking about the effort, faculty members emphasized that this program reflects SOD-SZABMU’s mission to integrate education, service, and social responsibility—empowering children and adolescents to adopt better oral health practices early in life.
This large-scale school outreach not only addresses current oral health needs but also aims to reduce the long-term burden of preventable dental diseases in Pakistan’s youth population.
