PMDC seeks detailed report on medical student’s death, urges nationwide mental health safeguards
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has expressed “deep sorrow and grief” over the death of a 22-year-old final-year medical student of Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU), calling the incident deeply alarming and a stark reminder of the fragility of student mental health within demanding medical environments.
In its official statement, the council said it “extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prays for strength and patience for them in this difficult time,” underlining the human tragedy behind the case and its emotional impact on the wider student community.
Taking notice of the seriousness of the incident, PMDC has formally directed the university to submit a factual account of what occurred. The council has asked FJMU to provide details within seven days, including the date, time and brief circumstances of the incident as per institutional records, along with information on any inquiry or fact-finding committee constituted, its composition, terms of reference, and the expected timeline for completion of its report.

The regulator has further sought information on initial findings, if any, and the concrete steps already taken or planned to strengthen student mental health support and counselling services, as well as safety measures in the hostel where the student had been living at the time of the incident.
Highlighting the national importance of the issue, PMDC said medical and dental students represent “the brightest and most valuable segment of the nation’s future healthcare workforce.” It warned that incidents of this nature are “deeply alarming and highlight the urgent need to strengthen student support systems in medical and dental institutions.”
Reaffirming its mandate, the council stated that it focuses on “protecting and safeguarding the physical and mental wellbeing of students and ensuring that educational environments remain supportive, safe, and responsive to student needs.”
In response, PMDC has advised all medical and dental colleges in the country to hire qualified counsellors and psychologists to provide timely guidance and both mental and physical health support to students in distress. It has also urged institutions to establish effective and confidential counselling mechanisms and to maintain vigilant monitoring of student wellbeing, with special attention to signs of psychological stress, anxiety, depression and burnout.
The council stressed that “proactive mental health support and timely counselling can play a critical role in preventing such heartbreaking incidents and in protecting the precious lives and future of students,” adding that it will continue engaging with relevant institutions to ensure that meaningful measures are implemented and that similar tragedies are not repeated.
According to reporting by Dawn, the deceased was a 22-year-old female final-year medical student who had been living in the Fatima Jinnah Medical University hostel in Lahore. She was a resident of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Dawn reported that the student allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the fourth floor of the FJMU hostel building on Tuesday night. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the medical student community and has intensified concerns about the psychological pressures faced by young doctors in training, prompting PMDC to step in for institutional accountability, transparency, and a coordinated national response to the deepening mental health crisis among medical students.
