JSMU hosts digital dentistry workshop to accelerate skills in scanning, CAD-CAM, and 3D printing
KARACHI: The Department of Operative Dentistry at the Sindh Institute Of Oral Health Sciences (SIOHS), Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), organized a hands-on workshop titled “Road Map To Digital Dentistry”, drawing more than 65 dental graduates and postgraduates from across Karachi. The program positioned digital dentistry as the main pathway to faster, more predictable, and patient-centric care.
Prof. Dr. Yawar Ali Abidi, head of Operative Dentistry, welcomed participants and outlined the workshop’s learning objectives. Dr. Konain Khalid, third-year FCPS resident, presented current advances in digital dentistry with a focus on intraoral scanners and CAD-CAM workflows. Dr. Abbas Mehdi, prosthodontist and restorative specialist at Fatima Jinnah Dental College, explained the fundamentals of anterior crown preparation, while Dr. Sameer Quraeshi, head of prosthodontics at Fatima Jinnah Dental College, demonstrated how digital technology is reshaping treatment outcomes from diagnosis to delivery.
What participants learned
The hands-on training introduced complete chairside-to-lab digital workflows designed to build confidence and speed in everyday practice:
- Crown preparation: Live demonstration by Dr. Abbas Mehdi followed by guided practice on models.
- Intraoral scanning: Step-by-step coaching by Dr. Sameer Quraeshi using advanced intraoral scanners.
- 3D printing and digital temporization: Demonstrations by Mr. Qasim and Mr. M. Amin covering design-to-print planning, provisional restorations, and conventional putty-impression temporization.
Shields of appreciation were presented to the speakers by Prof. Dr. Sajid Hanif, principal SIOHS, and Prof. Dr. Khalil Khan, dean SIOHS. The workshop was facilitated by faculty members Dr. Isma Sajjad, Dr. Maham Muneeb Lone, Dr. Jamshed Ahmed, Dr. Junaid Hasan, Dr. Haider Ali, Dr. Azfar Aheed, and Dr. Muhammad Ismail, ensuring focused supervision at every station.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Amjad Siraj Memon congratulated the organizers and emphasized the importance of continuing dental education to strengthen JSMU’s academic impact. The event highlighted SIOHS and JSMU’s commitment to translating innovation into clinical competency, enabling young dentists to integrate intraoral scanning, CAD-CAM design, and 3D printing into daily workflows for better patient outcomes.
