Islamabad’s future doctors lead a powerful hike against obesity
ISLAMABAD: What if the battle against obesity did not begin in clinics but on mountain trails? That question came alive in Islamabad when hundreds of future and current healthcare professionals stepped out of classrooms and onto the Margalla Hills to send a bold national message: prevention starts with practice.
Islamabad Medical & Dental College, in collaboration with Dr. Akbar Niazi Teaching Hospital, both flagship institutions of GAK HealthCare International, organized a high-energy “Hike Against Obesity” at Margalla Trail 3. The scenic route of the Margalla Hills became a living classroom for wellness, where medicine met movement.
The day began with symbolic flair through a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a spirited hiking competition, turning a routine morning into a declaration of healthy intent. The event was meticulously planned by the IMDC Hike & Adventure Club under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Ahmad Raza, whose team ensured the activity remained eco-friendly and disciplined, setting a benchmark for responsible outdoor engagement.

More than 700 participants, including students of medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, medical laboratory technology, and nursing, marched up the trail alongside faculty members, practicing physicians, surgeons, and healthcare management professionals. Senior leadership remained present throughout, encouraging participants and reinforcing the importance of keeping the trail litter-free to protect Islamabad’s natural heritage.
Addressing the gathering, Yasir Khan Niazi, Group CEO of GAK HealthCare, described the initiative as more than a recreational outing. He emphasized that such programs reflect the institution’s broader mission to produce not only academically strong graduates but professionals rooted in ethical practice, community engagement, and healthy living.

Imran Ali Ghouri, Head of GAK HealthCare Communications, told media that the Margalla Hills echoed with a new prescription: wellness must be lived before it is prescribed. In a city known for policy debates and traffic noise, the hills briefly carried a stronger message shaped by footsteps and determination.
The event concluded on a festive note with music, interactive moments, and a lively prize distribution ceremony at the finish line. Students, parents, and faculty praised the organizers for creating an experience that proved health promotion can be joyful as well as purposeful.
By taking the fight against obesity out of conference halls and into nature, IMDC and Dr. Akbar Niazi Teaching Hospital transformed a hike into a public health statement, reinforcing that Pakistan’s next generation of healthcare leaders is learning to model the lifestyle it hopes to inspire nationwide.
