FDI tobacco cessation workshops strengthen global health response by training dental and medical professionals
Tobacco use remains one of the leading causes of preventable disease and death globally, posing serious threats to both general and oral health. Recognizing the urgent need for targeted intervention, the FDI World Dental Federation has been actively driving change through its Tobacco Cessation Project, launched in 2020. This global initiative focuses on equipping dental and medical professionals with the skills to offer effective tobacco cessation support to their patients.
In a recent wave of activity, FDI successfully completed three capacity-building workshops for health professionals, reaching nearly 200 participants across Tunisia, Lebanon, and Chile. These workshops were designed to be practical, engaging, and impactful—centered around internationally recognized cessation counseling models, the 5 As (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange) and the 5 Rs (Relevance, Risks, Rewards, Roadblocks, Repetition).
Participants included dentists, doctors, and academic experts, all of whom engaged in interactive sessions and role plays that mimicked real-world consultations. These simulations not only built confidence but also fostered a stronger understanding of how to motivate behavioral change in patients addicted to tobacco.

What set these workshops apart?
- Practical application of cessation frameworks
- Culturally relevant training tailored to regional needs
- Interdisciplinary collaboration between dental and medical professionals
- First-time exposure to structured tobacco cessation strategies in some countries
FDI’s approach is grounded in evidence, built on expert collaboration, and aligned with global health priorities. Participants praised the workshops for being inclusive, well-structured, and immediately applicable in clinical settings.
These workshops are part of a broader effort to reduce tobacco-related harm through early intervention by oral health providers, who often witness the first signs of tobacco’s damaging effects in the mouth.
