Hands-on fixed prosthodontics workshop conducted at IADSR for PDAGD participants

LAHORE: The Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR) successfully organized recently a two-day hands-on workshop on Fixed Prosthodontics, as part of its 19th Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD) program.

The workshop was led by Prof. Dr. Tayyaba Saleem (BDS, FCPS), Professor and Head of Department of Prosthodontics at Islamabad Medical and Dental College, and brought together dentists seeking advanced training in fixed prosthodontic techniques.

Day 1: Crown preparation and shade mapping

The first day focused on crown preparations and shade selection. Participants received detailed guidance on:

  • Clinical indications for crowns and choosing between full and partial coverage preparations
  • Material selection considerations for optimal strength and aesthetics
  • Hands-on tooth preparation on typodonts, emphasizing margin design, taper, and occlusal reduction
  • Shade mapping techniques to achieve natural esthetics, including lighting considerations
  • Practicing putty impressions to ensure accurate reproduction of prepared teeth

Day 2: Bridge preparation and multi-unit restorations

On the second day, the focus shifted to bridge construction and multi-unit cases. Prof. Dr. Tayyaba Saleem guided participants through:

  • Principles of fixed partial dentures, pontic design, and abutment evaluation
  • Step-by-step bridge preparation demonstration followed by hands-on practice
  • Techniques to assess occlusion, contour, and fit for functional restorations
  • The importance of pontic hygiene and patient-specific treatment planning
  • Taking precise putty impressions for bridge cases under expert supervision

The workshop concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where participants addressed clinical challenges and received personalized feedback from the facilitator.

Participants reported that the workshop enhanced their technical skills and clinical confidence, aligning with IADSR’s mission to promote evidence-based, practice-oriented dental education in Pakistan.
