ISLAMABAD: More than 1,400 Pakistani medical graduates have secured positions in United States residency programmes in 2026, marking one of the country's strongest performances in international postgraduate medical training and highlighting the growing global competitiveness of Pakistan's future doctors.
The achievement was announced by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), which described the development as a significant milestone for Pakistan's medical education system and attributed the outcome to sustained improvements in medical training, curriculum reforms and strengthened quality assurance over recent years.
The latest figure comes at a time when competition for residency positions in the United States remains intense. International medical graduates must successfully complete the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) pathway and compete through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) to obtain specialist training positions across American hospitals.
According to PMDC, the increasing number of Pakistani graduates entering these programmes reflects years of work to align the country's medical education with internationally recognized standards.
PMDC links success to education reforms

Successful completion of residency training enables physicians to pursue specialist careers and, subject to licensing requirements, independent medical practice in the United States.

PMDC president congratulates graduates
PMDC President Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj congratulated the successful graduates, describing their achievement as a source of national pride.
