PMDC unveils new MDCAT 2025 syllabus with updated exam pattern, subject focus

ISLAMABAD:  The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has officially released the revised syllabus for MDCAT 2025 on its official website, setting the stage for a standardized and transparent medical and dental college admission process across the country.

This MDCAT 2025 syllabus update is part of PMDC’s commitment to improving the quality, fairness, and consistency of healthcare education in Pakistan. The new curriculum puts a strong emphasis on conceptual understanding, analytical reasoning, and critical thinking in five key subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, and Logical Reasoning.

Key features of the new MDCAT 2025 syllabus:

  • Total questions: 180 MCQs
  • Exam duration: 3 hours
  • Difficulty level: 15% easy, 70% moderate, 15% difficult
  • Exam format: Fully MCQ-based, no negative marking

Passing criteria:

  • 55% minimum marks for admission to medical colleges
  • 50% minimum marks for admission to dental colleges

The MDCAT exam is tentatively scheduled for the last Sunday of September or first Sunday of October 2025. Final dates will be announced soon after consultations with admitting universities and approval from the PMDC Council.

Why the new MDCAT syllabus matters

PMDC President Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj highlighted that the revised syllabus addresses earlier gaps and reflects a shift toward a more merit-based and transparent assessment system. He stated that the update was compiled within just six months and balances foundational knowledge with reasoning skills — aligning with both national academic standards and global best practices.

The new syllabus has been finalized through a highly inclusive and consultative process, involving:

  • Nine meetings of the MDCAT Committee and working groups
  • Stakeholder feedback from Provincial Education & Health Departments, IBCC, AJK & Gilgit-Baltistan, Federal & Regional Boards
  • Input from admitting universities and the general public

Following review and integration of this feedback, the syllabus was approved by the National Medical and Dental Academic Board and the PMDC Council before being published online.

A move toward unified national assessment

Dr. Taj emphasized that the PMDC is developing a national-level question bank for MDCAT, in collaboration with academic experts, to support a fair and standardized evaluation process. He encouraged all MDCAT aspirants to begin preparation using the official updated syllabus and regularly visit the PMDC website for further announcements regarding exam schedule, registration, and resources.
