Gen Z more likely to choose alternative oral care products, study finds
The study by Delta Dental, released as part of its State of America’s Oral Health and Wellness Report, reveals a generational divide in oral care behavior — with Gen Z leading the way in adopting alternative and eco-friendly dental products.
The national survey, which included responses from over 2,000 U.S. adults and parents, found that while the majority of Americans (92%) agree oral health is vital to overall well-being, younger adults, particularly Gen Z, are reshaping what oral care looks like in practice.
One of the most striking findings from the report is that only 73% of Gen Z respondents believe good oral health leads to a healthier lifestyle, compared to a 90% average across Millennials, Gen X, and Boomers. This signals a potential gap in oral health education or perception among younger individuals.
However, when it comes to product preferences and innovation, Gen Z stands out.
66% of Gen Z report using alternative or non-traditional oral care products, such as bamboo toothbrushes, fluoride-free toothpaste, and natural or vegan oral rinses — making them twice as likely as Baby Boomers to do so.
This trend toward sustainable and non-conventional products isn’t just a lifestyle choice — it’s a signal to oral care brands and dental professionals. The rising preference among Gen Z for eco-conscious and ingredient-transparent solutions points to a growing demand for clean, green, and innovative oral health products.
As younger generations continue to influence market dynamics, companies and dental practices that align with Gen Z values — including sustainability, health transparency, and product personalization — are more likely to thrive.
This report reinforces the importance of understanding generational shifts in health behavior. While Gen Z shows a promising inclination toward eco-friendly alternatives, there’s still a critical need for ongoing oral health education and engagement to bridge knowledge gaps and promote holistic wellness.
