Karachi Metropolitan University pioneers oral health initiative for the visually impaired
KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan University (KMU) has reaffirmed its commitment to community service by organizing an Oral Health Awareness and Screening Program for visually impaired individuals. This initiative, led by the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry, marks a significant milestone in the university’s ongoing efforts to make healthcare more inclusive.
The event, which took place at the Binae Institute, Karachi, was the first-ever oral health outreach program specifically designed for visually compromised adults and children. Recognizing the unique needs of this underserved group, KMU took steps to provide tailored care, ensuring that participants received a personalized experience. This includes not only oral health screenings but also hands-on oral hygiene training, which aimed to equip participants with the tools to maintain their oral health independently.
Empowering through education: Hands-on oral hygiene training
The program included one-to-one training in oral hygiene practices, helping participants learn the proper techniques for brushing, flossing, and caring for their teeth. Essential oral hygiene tools, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, were distributed to participants to encourage daily care.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Sana Adeeba Islam, Head of the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry, the program aimed to address a critical gap in oral healthcare access for visually impaired individuals. Dr. Abdul Aleem, Senior Registrar and Visit Coordinator, played an essential role in ensuring the smooth execution of the event, furthering the university’s mission of serving the underserved communities.
Fostering inclusive healthcare and social responsibility
This initiative goes beyond just oral health education; it represents KMU’s deep commitment to fostering inclusive healthcare practices. By reaching out to visually impaired individuals, who often face barriers to healthcare access, KMU is playing a critical role in promoting social responsibility and ensuring that all members of the community have access to preventive healthcare.
Such initiatives not only raise awareness about oral health but also empower marginalized groups by providing them with the knowledge and tools necessary to take charge of their health. As one of the leading public-sector universities in Karachi, KMU continues to strengthen its position as an institution that integrates education, community service, and healthcare advocacy.
A vision for future outreach programs
KMU’s effort serves as a shining example for other universities and healthcare institutions to follow. By recognizing and addressing the specific needs of individuals with disabilities, the university is paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system in Pakistan. As the university looks ahead, it plans to expand its outreach efforts, aiming to cover more communities in need of specialized healthcare services.
This program not only improves the lives of participants but also sets a precedent for future community-oriented health initiatives, reinforcing KMU’s role as a responsible and forward-thinking institution committed to the betterment of society.
