WASHINGTON: A nationwide survey conducted in the US reveals a surprising gap between awareness and action when it comes to oral health. According to data from a OnePoll study conducted on behalf of Listerine, the average American adult forgets to brush their teeth five times a week — a staggering finding that highlights lapses in basic oral hygiene habits.

The survey of 2,000 U.S. adults found similar negligence in flossing and mouthwash use. Despite these forgetful habits, 92% of respondents acknowledged the crucial connection between oral health and overall wellness. In fact, more than half expressed a willingness to address poor oral care within their social circles, with 32% comfortable inspecting a loved one’s mouth and 14% even willing to share their own toothbrush. These behaviors showcase a surprising blend of forgetfulness and altruism when it comes to dental hygiene.
Confidence is closely tied to good oral health for 89% of respondents, with three-quarters adhering to practices they believe are “correct,” such as brushing at least twice daily, using fluoride-based mouthwash, and attending regular dental check-ups.
However, knowledge does not always translate to action. One in four Americans admitted to feeling embarrassed about their oral health. In the past year, 34% battled sensitive teeth, 28% faced plaque build-up, and 24% experienced bleeding gums. Alarmingly, 21% reported oral sensitivity occurring at least every other week.
The awareness of gum disease severity is on the rise, with 93% of respondents recognizing bleeding gums as a serious issue. Many have proactively sought products targeting halitosis, cavities, and gingivitis. These findings highlight a growing desire among Americans to tackle common dental problems, emphasizing prevention as the best cure.
Although perfection may elude most, this survey demonstrates that Americans are informed, concerned, and increasingly motivated to take action to improve their oral health — both for themselves and those they care about.
