PESHAWAR: At a time when preventive dental care remains inaccessible for many communities across Pakistan, a major collaborative oral health initiative in Peshawar has highlighted how community-driven healthcare partnerships can directly improve public wellbeing and awareness.

In a significant step toward expanding access to affordable oral healthcare, Khushali Welfare Foundation, in collaboration with the Aga Khan Health Board Peshawar, Ismaili Civic Pakistan, and Rehman College of Dentistry, successfully organized a large-scale Dental Screening Camp and Oral Health Awareness Session for the Ismaili community at Amin Community Hall.

The initiative did far more than provide temporary clinical support. It addressed a much deeper issue increasingly confronting Pakistan’s healthcare system — the lack of preventive oral healthcare awareness and delayed dental treatment among the communities.

More than a free dental camp

The camp provided free dental check-ups, basic dental treatments, and professional oral examinations to community members, while subsidized rates were offered for advanced dental procedures requiring further care.

Organizers confirmed that more than 200 individuals from the Ismaili community benefited from the initiative, reflecting both the demand for accessible dental services and the urgent need for continued community-level oral health interventions.

Healthcare experts increasingly warn that untreated oral diseases are silently becoming a major public health burden in Pakistan, often contributing to pain, infections, nutritional issues, speech difficulties, and reduced quality of life.

Initiatives like this, they say, help bridge critical gaps between communities and preventive healthcare services.

Oral health awareness takes center stage

Alongside clinical services, an educational awareness session was also conducted to emphasize:
Proper oral hygiene practices
Preventive dental care
Importance of regular dental check-ups
Early detection of oral diseases

The awareness component proved particularly important, as many dental conditions in Pakistan are often diagnosed late due to low awareness, financial barriers, or fear associated with dental treatment.

Dental professionals involved in the program stressed that preventive dentistry remains one of the most effective strategies for reducing long-term healthcare complications and treatment costs.

Collaboration driving community impact

The initiative also highlighted the growing role of institutional partnerships in strengthening public healthcare outreach.

Rehman Dental College continued its support for the program by facilitating dental services and helping improve access to quality oral healthcare for underserved populations.

Organizers acknowledged the efforts of healthcare professionals, volunteers, and partner organizations whose collaboration made the initiative possible.

Special appreciation was extended to Dr. Rumeena Imran, founder of Khushali Welfare Foundation, and Dr. Insha Ali, Lead of Adolescent Health and Dental at Aga Khan Peshawar, for their leadership, commitment, and continued contributions toward community oral health promotion.

A larger healthcare message

Public health specialists say Pakistan continues to face significant oral health challenges, particularly in underserved populations where routine dental care is often neglected until severe complications arise.

Community dental screening camps, awareness drives, and preventive education programs are increasingly being recognized as essential tools for reducing disease burden and promoting healthier communities.

As healthcare systems worldwide move toward prevention-focused models, initiatives like the Peshawar dental camp demonstrate how localized collaborations can create meaningful public health impact — one community at a time.
