KARACHI: In a country where childhood dental health often goes unnoticed in many pockets of our society, a group of passionate dental students stepped in to make a tangible difference. The Community Dentistry team of Jinnah Medical and Dental College (JMDC) recently transformed oral healthcare at GBSS Karabhai Karimjee Khadda Lyari Campus, Karachi, with a comprehensive oral health awareness session and dental checkup for 650 students.

Under the guidance of Dr. Muhammad Mohsin Haider, Assistant Professor & Head of Department, Community Dentistry, the initiative empowered children from nursery to Grade 10 to understand the importance of healthy teeth and preventive oral care, turning routine checkups into a life-changing educational experience.

A coordinated effort for community-wide impact

The dedicated team included Demonstrators Dr. Arish Sohail and Dr. Aimen Imran, alongside five House Officers: Dr. Shaheer, Dr. Maryam, Dr. UmmeHani, Dr. Tooba, and Dr. Nimrah, supported by one staff member. Each House Officer worked closely with teachers to examine students, provide guidance, and demonstrate proper tooth-brushing techniques using dental models.

This hands-on approach ensured that children not only received dental assessments but also learned essential habits that will protect their oral health for years to come.

School leadership applauds JMDC initiative

The Principal of GBSS Lyari expressed heartfelt appreciation, praising the JMDC team for bringing professional dental care directly to students. She highlighted how such programs instill preventive care awareness at an early age, reducing future dental problems and promoting healthier communities.

Preventive dentistry as a solution for Pakistan’s growing oral health challenge

Childhood dental issues are often neglected in low-resource areas, leading to higher rates of cavities, gum disease, and systemic health problems later in life. Initiatives like JMDC’s school outreach program showcase how medical and dental institutions can bridge gaps in public health while fostering community trust and education.

By combining clinical care with education, JMDC is setting a benchmark for school-based oral health interventions in Karachi and across Pakistan.
