KARACHI: In an effort to strengthen the connection between classroom learning and real-world healthcare practices, the Department of Periodontology at Hamdard University Dental Hospital organized an educational visit to Platinum Pharmaceutical Company for third-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students.
The academic activity, titled “Perio-Pharma Interface,” was conducted recently, and aimed to provide future dental professionals with firsthand exposure to the pharmaceutical processes behind medications commonly used in periodontal care and oral health management.
The visit offered students a rare opportunity to observe how pharmaceutical products move from formulation and manufacturing to quality assurance and distribution, helping them better understand the scientific and regulatory foundations that support evidence-based dental practice.
Bridging dentistry and pharmaceutical sciences
Periodontal therapy often relies on chemotherapeutic agents, antimicrobial medications, and adjunctive pharmaceutical products that complement clinical treatment. Understanding how these products are developed, tested, and manufactured is increasingly considered an important component of contemporary dental education.
During the visit, students were introduced to key stages of pharmaceutical production, including raw material handling, manufacturing procedures, packaging systems, quality control mechanisms, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance requirements.

The educational trip was supervised by faculty members from the Department of Periodontology, including Dr. Amna Arsalan, Dr. Bilal Shahid Ansari, Dr. Hafsa Feroze, and Dr. Saad Ali, under the guidance of Prof. Syed Imran Hasan, Head of Department and Principal of Hamdard University Dental Hospital.
According to the department, the initiative was designed to enhance experiential learning by allowing students to observe healthcare systems beyond traditional clinical settings.
Faculty emphasized that exposure to pharmaceutical manufacturing environments encourages critical thinking, reflective learning, and a deeper understanding of how scientific research translates into products that support patient treatment and disease management.
