LMDC dental college holds workshop on item analysis to improve assessment reliability, fairness
LAHORE: Under the patronage of principal and dean, dental college, Lahore Medical and Dental College (LMDC), Prof. Dr. Aqib Sohail, a comprehensive workshop on item analysis was held at the Dental College, LMDC, aimed at equipping participants — particularly faculty members — with advanced skills to improve assessment quality and fairness. The session was facilitated by Dr. M. Zeeshan Baig, deputy director, department of medical education, Frontier Medical and Dental College, Islamabad.
The workshop began with a brief introduction from the facilitator, followed by participant introductions. Dr. Baig provided an in-depth explanation of the importance of item analysis in ensuring valid, reliable, and fair assessments in medical and dental education. Participants were equipped with the knowledge to effectively plan, conduct, and implement both pre-hoc and post-hoc item analysis.
A practical checklist for both processes was shared, covering essential parameters including:
- Reliability
- Validity
- Discrimination index
- Difficulty index
- Distractor analysis
Interactive discussions, group activities, and a quick post-hoc analysis exercise allowed participants to apply the concepts in real time. Common challenges in item analysis were addressed, with practical solutions offered to ensure consistency and fairness in evaluations.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Dr. Aqib Sohail praised the workshop’s success and highlighted the importance of continuous professional development.
