KARACHI: In a significant international achievement for Pakistan's dental community, a final-year Prosthodontics resident from Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine (AIDM) has been awarded one of the world's most competitive training opportunities in implant dentistry, opening the door to advanced clinical education and research in Japan.
Dr Tooba Shabbir has secured the prestigious International Team for Implantology (ITI) Scholarship for the 2026–2027 academic term, earning a place among a select group of young clinicians chosen annually from around the world to receive intensive postgraduate training at internationally recognised centres of excellence in implant dentistry.
The scholarship will see Dr Shabbir spend a fully funded academic year at the Institute of Science Tokyo—formerly the Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU)—one of Japan's leading academic institutions for dental education and research. She will train under the supervision of Prof Eriko Marukawa, alongside co-chairs Prof Takanori Iwata, Prof Manabu Kanazawa and Assistant Prof Shunsuke Fukuba.
The achievement represents an important milestone not only for Dr Shabbir but also for Pakistan's growing presence in international implant dentistry and advanced prosthodontic education.
Established in 1998, the ITI Scholarship Programme is regarded as one of the most respected international training initiatives in implant dentistry. Administered by the International Team for Implantology, the programme enables promising young clinicians to spend one year at leading university-based scholarship centres, gaining advanced experience in implant surgery, prosthetic rehabilitation, evidence-based clinical practice and research while building professional networks across the global dental community. Since its launch, the programme has supported hundreds of clinicians from more than 50 countries.
Competition for the scholarship is exceptionally strong. Applicants are generally expected to have completed postgraduate specialty training or possess significant clinical experience, demonstrate a record of peer-reviewed scientific publications, present research at professional meetings and show a clear commitment to leadership in implant dentistry. Successful candidates are selected through a rigorous international evaluation process conducted by ITI Scholarship Centre directors.
According to Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine, Dr Shabbir's selection reflects her outstanding academic performance, clinical dedication, research contributions and sustained interest in implant dentistry. Her profile includes peer-reviewed scientific publications, active participation in academic activities and a growing portfolio of clinical work in prosthodontics.
The institute also credited the strong mentorship provided by the Department of Prosthodontics, particularly her supervisor Prof Dr Naseer Ahmed, whose academic guidance played an important role throughout her postgraduate training.
Support from the ITI Karachi Study Clubs, led by Dr Fahad Umer of the Department of Dentistry at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, was also recognised as an important contributor to her professional development and preparation for the international scholarship.
The scholarship comes at a time when implant dentistry continues to evolve rapidly through advances in digital workflows, biomaterials, regenerative techniques and evidence-based treatment planning.
