KARACHI: The Department of Community Dentistry at Jinnah Medical And Dental College (JMDC) carried out a meaningful oral health awareness and dental screening session at IDA Rieu Welfare Association Schools & Colleges for Blind & Deaf. The activity was led by Dr. Muhammad Mohsin Haider, Head of Department (HOD), Community Dentistry, as part of JMDC’s community outreach initiative to promote preventive oral health care.

The session aimed to raise awareness about dental hygiene and oral care among differently-abled children, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility in dental education. The dental team, comprising faculty members and 2nd Year BDS students, conducted interactive oral health education sessions separately for blind and deaf students, adapting teaching methods to meet their specific needs.

Interactive learning for all students

Using dental models, charts, and visual aids, students demonstrated toothbrushing techniques, explained oral hygiene practices, and discussed the role of diet in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. In a remarkable gesture of inclusion, dental students interacted with deaf pupils using sign language, guided by their instructor, to make the learning experience more meaningful and engaging.

Over 400 students aged between 6–14 years participated enthusiastically in the awareness and screening activity. Those requiring dental treatment were identified and guided through their teachers for follow-up care.

Appreciation from the institution

The Principal of IDA Rieu Welfare Association expressed deep appreciation for JMDC’s initiative, acknowledging the importance of such health education programs in empowering children with special needs. “Activities like these not only improve awareness but also help children build confidence in managing their health,” the principal remarked.

JMDC’s commitment to community oral health

Dr. Muhammad Mohsin Haider highlighted that community-based activities are at the heart of JMDC’s public health mission. “Our goal is to serve the community through preventive education and hands-on learning. Reaching out to differently-abled children ensures that no group is left behind in oral health awareness,” he said.

This initiative reflects JMDC’s ongoing commitment to social responsibility, community dentistry, and inclusive healthcare — bridging the gap between education, empathy, and service.
