Hands-on workshop on laser dentistry elevates skills at IADSR
LAHORE: The Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR) successfully conducted a one-day hands-on workshop on Laser Dentistry, recently, as part of its 19th Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD). The session, led by Dr. Waqas Javied Malik—renowned Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and Diplomate of the American Board of Laser Surgery—provided participants with a detailed understanding of modern laser applications in dentistry.
Dr. Waqas began the workshop with an engaging overview of the evolution of laser technology in dentistry, emphasizing its growing significance, safety, and versatility in contemporary clinical practice. Participants learned the principles of laser physics, including wavelength selection, tissue interaction, chromophore targeting, and laser-tissue dynamics crucial for predictable outcomes.
The workshop included an in-depth discussion on various dental laser systems, focusing on diode, Er:YAG, Nd:YAG, and CO₂ lasers. Dr. Waqas explained clinical indications and contraindications, covering soft-tissue procedures such as:
- Gingivectomy and operculectomy
- Depigmentation and frenectomy
- Aphthous ulcer therapy
- Periodontal pocket management
- Low-level laser therapy (LLLT)
Strict safety protocols were reinforced, including laser signage, eyewear specifications, controlled environment setup, and plume evacuation.
A highlight of the workshop was live laser demonstrations by Dr. Waqas, showcasing practical techniques for soft-tissue surgeries, including laser-assisted gingival contouring and peri-implant soft tissue management. Participants observed proper power settings, continuous vs. pulsed modes, initiation techniques, and hemostasis control for minimally invasive procedures with reduced postoperative discomfort.
The second half was a fully hands-on session, enabling attendees to practice procedures on simulation models and patients. Dr. Waqas provided individual guidance and real-time feedback, helping participants troubleshoot common clinical challenges like tissue rebound, carbonization, delayed healing, and energy delivery errors.
The workshop concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where practitioners discussed real-world cases, deepening their knowledge of integrating lasers into daily dental practice. Participants praised the workshop as a transformative learning experience that enhanced their confidence and competence in laser-assisted dentistry.
