COLOGNE: The future of dental prevention is here — and it’s smarter, more personalized, and digitally connected than ever. From March 16–20, 2027, the 42nd International Dental Show (IDS) in Cologne will unveil a wave of innovations that promise to redefine how dentists protect teeth and gums.
AI meets oral hygiene
Electric toothbrushes are no longer just motorized brushes. The latest AI-driven models track brushing pressure, duration, and mouth regions in real-time, sending data to smartphones and cloud platforms. Dentists can now receive anonymized insights into their patients’ oral habits, enabling tailored advice, improved compliance, and measurable results. Studies show AI-assisted brushing can significantly reduce inflamed periodontal pockets compared to traditional routines.
Fluoride and remineralization 2.0
Fluoride remains the gold standard in caries prevention, but modern varnishes now contain combinations like olaflur, dectaflur, and calcium fluoride for enhanced protection. Hydroxyapatite-based care creams help remineralize enamel after orthodontic treatment or appliance removal — a critical tool for children, adults, and patients with special oral needs.

Tongue cleaning and halitosis management
With 60–80% of oral bacteria residing on the tongue, professional and home-based cleaning is crucial. IDS exhibitors will showcase soft brushes, ultrasonic systems, tongue vacuums, scrapers, and lamellar/ bristle cleaners — all designed to combat bad breath and reduce bacterial load, alongside antibacterial gels and photodynamic therapies.
Tailored prevention for every patient
Minimally invasive techniques for children, advanced root surface preparation for adults, and prophylaxis products adapted for orthodontic or high-risk patients highlight a shift toward truly individualized oral care. Innovations also extend to travel-friendly electric brushes with integrated UV sterilization, ensuring hygiene is maintained anywhere in the world.
A global stage for dental excellence
Mark Stephan Pace, Chairman of the German Dental Industry (VDDI), emphasized, “The commitment of dental prophylaxis teams and preventive dentistry has achieved remarkable results. IDS 2027 ensures these advances reach practitioners, empowering them to deliver next-level prevention and patient care.”
IDS 2027 is more than an exhibition — it’s a roadmap for dentists seeking state-of-the-art tools, digital integration, and scientifically backed prophylaxis for every patient, from toddlers to seniors.
