Community dental outreach at DHSCSS Seaview Campus raises dental awareness
KARACHI: The Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry of Altamash General Hospital, Karachi recently organised a community dental outreach at DHACSS Seaview Campus to promote dental awareness among students. The outreach, led by the faculty of community dentistry, combined oral examinations with practical education on oral hygiene and preventive care.
Under the supervision of Dr. Amir Akbar Shaikh, Associate Professor and Head of the Department, and Dr. Naseer Ahmed, Assistant Professor, the initiative aimed to reinforce the importance of daily oral care and early detection of dental problems. Toothpaste was distributed to students to encourage good brushing habits and routine oral hygiene.
The outreach team — demonstrators from the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry, Dr. Nikita Bodani, Dr. Anum Ilyas and Dr. Alkesh Kammal, together with demonstrators from other departments and second-year dental students — conducted oral screenings and delivered concise, practical lessons on preventive dentistry. Key topics covered included:
- Proper brushing and flossing techniques.
- The role of diet in maintaining dental health.
- The importance of regular dental check-ups and early intervention.
The activity not only identified students who needed follow-up care but also strengthened public health messaging on preventive oral care. Faculty members emphasised that community engagement is central to Altamash General Hospital’s mission to improve population oral health and reduce future treatment burdens.
This outreach successfully raised dental awareness at the campus level and reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to sustained community programmes that educate, screen and refer patients for timely care.
