KARACHI: “The best protection for public health is prevention, not cleanup.” This powerful quote by John McNabb echoed during Jinnah Medical & Dental College’s (JMDC) latest bimonthly community outreach visit, as 2nd year BDS students conducted an oral health awareness session and free dental checkup at Ladybird Grammar School, North Nazimabad, Karachi.

Supervised by Dr Muhammad Mohsin Haider, Head of the Department of Community Dentistry, the session was a valuable learning and service opportunity. He was joined by faculty members Dr Ayesha Hassan, Dr Usman Bukhari, Dr Shumaila Rafique, and Dr Heeba, who collectively guided the students and ensured high standards of professional interaction.

The school visit was marked by:

  • Interactive oral health education sessions for schoolchildren, conducted by BDS students.
  • Demonstrations of proper brushing techniques using dental models.
  • Pictorial displays explaining good and bad dietary habits for oral hygiene.
  • One-on-one dental checkups for students, highlighting early prevention.

Children responded enthusiastically, actively engaging   and attentively observing the brushing techniques. The teaching methodology combined interactive communication with visual learning, reinforcing essential oral hygiene habits.

The Principal of Ladybird Grammar School expressed heartfelt appreciation for JMDC’s thoughtful initiative and the professionalism shown by both students and faculty, stating that the session was “educational, engaging, and much needed.”

This visit was part of JMDC’s continued mission to instill public health values in future dentists while delivering practical oral care knowledge to the community. It embodies the core values of preventive dentistry, patient-centered care, and socially responsive education.
