Journal of Dental Hygiene marks 100 years of advancing dental hygiene science

CHICAGO: The Journal of Dental Hygiene (JDH) has reached a historic milestone, publishing its centennial issue in February 2026, marking 100 years as the only peer-reviewed scientific journal devoted entirely to dental hygiene research in the United States. This landmark issue celebrates a century of scholarship, innovation, and collaboration in preventive oral healthcare.

A century of dental hygiene excellence

The February 2026 issue opens with a guest editorial by Editor Emeritus Rebecca S. Wilder, RDH, MS, FADHA, who reflects on key moments and achievements in the journal’s rich history. The centennial edition also features congratulatory letters and video messages from oral health organizations worldwide, highlighting the strong collaborative relationships that have shaped both the journal and the profession.

“These messages reflect the types of collaborative relationships that have strengthened the journal, the ADHA, and our profession over these ten decades,” said ADHA President Lancette VanGuilder, BS, RDH, PHEDH, CEAS, FADHA. “As we enter our second century of dental hygiene scholarship, we remain committed to the partnerships and collaborative spirit these letters represent.”

Origins and legacy

The Journal of Dental Hygiene traces its roots back to August 1926, when the ADHA Board of Directors voted to launch its own journal rather than affiliate with an existing publication. Dorothy Bryant of Augusta, Maine, was appointed as the first editor, and Volume 1, Issue 1 was published in January 1927. Over the past 100 years, JDH has served as a cornerstone for dental hygiene research, clinical advancements, and educational standards.

Global reach, centennial celebrations

The journal reaches subscribers across the United States, as well as internationally in countries including Japan, Australia, Canada, South Africa, and Europe. Dental hygiene programs worldwide rely on JDH as a critical resource for evidence-based research, professional guidance, and clinical best practices.

To mark the centennial, ADHA will host retrospectives, archival explorations, special guest editors, contests, and a focus on the impact of clinical research in dental hygiene throughout 2026.

A platform for global dental hygiene advancement

As the flagship publication of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA), the journal continues to represent the professional interests of more than 220,000 dental hygienists in the United States, promoting optimal oral health as a key component of total health. JDH’s 100-year journey underscores the importance of research, collaboration, and innovation in advancing preventive oral healthcare globally.

Dental professionals, educators, and researchers are invited to explore the centennial issue, reflect on the field’s progress, and participate in shaping the next century of dental hygiene scholarship.
