FJDC observes World Hypertension Week with awareness walk and free blood pressure screening

KARACHI: The Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC) in Karachi commemorated World Hypertension Week 2025 with a series of public health activities, including an educational lecture, an awareness walk, and free blood pressure screenings. The initiative, held at the FJDC Dental Hospital in Azam Town starting from May 19, aimed to raise awareness about hypertension—widely known as the “Silent Killer” due to its lack of symptoms and potential to cause severe cardiovascular complications.

A growing health concern in Pakistan

According to the National Health Survey of Pakistan, around 18.9% of people over 15 years old suffer from hypertension, with the condition more prevalent in urban areas. Alarmingly, nearly 70% of affected individuals remain undiagnosed, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. With fewer than 3% of patients having their blood pressure under control, FJDC’s initiative comes at a critical time.

Expert lecture on hypertension risks, prevention

The week-long observance began with a lecture titled “The Dangers of Uncontrolled Hypertension”, delivered by Dr. Habib Mustafa, a senior Consultant Physician at Chiniot General Hospital. Addressing final-year dental students, Dr. Habib underlined the importance of early diagnosis and lifestyle modifications to control high blood pressure.

He advised that maintaining a healthy body weight, reducing salt intake, exercising regularly, avoiding smoking and alcohol, managing stress, and using validated blood pressure monitors were key steps in preventing hypertension. Dr. Habib also detailed the correct protocol for accurate BP measurement—such as using the proper cuff size, taking multiple readings, and avoiding caffeine and physical activity before testing.

Community engagement through walk, free screenings

To engage the wider community, FJDC students and house officers participated in a spirited awareness walk across Azam Town, sharing information about hypertension prevention with local residents. Their energy and commitment encouraged locals to take charge of their heart health and seek timely medical care.

In collaboration with Getz Pharma, FJDC also organized a free blood pressure screening camp throughout the week. Over 100 residents availed the service, with elevated cases referred for further counseling by Dr. Saeed Akhtar Jaffery from FJDC’s General Medicine Department.

A step toward healthier communities

By combining expert knowledge, community participation, and clinical outreach, FJDC’s observance of World Hypertension Week demonstrated its commitment to preventive healthcare and public well-being. The event served not only to identify undiagnosed cases but also to educate individuals on how simple lifestyle changes can make a long-term difference in managing blood pressure.

The initiative is a testament to FJDC’s proactive role in addressing Pakistan’s non-communicable disease burden and building a culture of health literacy and self-care.
