KARACHI: Oral health plays a crucial role in a child’s overall well-being, yet it often remains neglected, especially in underserved communities. Recognizing the need for early dental intervention, Hamdard Medical and Dental College organized a school-based oral health screening and awareness initiative at Custom Public School, Karachi.

Led by senior faculty members including Dr. Syed Muzzammil Shah, Dr. Saima Asim, Dr. Shikoh Naz, and Dr. Mudasir Aslam, the program aimed to assess dental health conditions, provide preventive education, and empower students with basic oral hygiene knowledge.

The initiative was carried out by second-year BDS students, who conducted oral examinations for students from class 1 to matric, following strict hygiene protocols. The screenings revealed common oral health issues such as:

  • Dental caries
  • Plaque accumulation
  • Malocclusion
  • Gingival inflammation
  • Fluorosis
  • General poor oral hygiene

To complement the clinical component, the team also conducted interactive educational sessions tailored to age groups. These sessions used visual aids to demonstrate proper brushing techniques, stress the importance of brushing twice daily, and promote healthy dietary habits alongside regular dental visits.

Informative leaflets and brushing charts were also distributed to both students and faculty to reinforce learning at home and in classrooms.

The initiative was warmly received by the school community. Teachers and students expressed appreciation for the opportunity to learn about oral hygiene in a practical, accessible way. The program not only served as a valuable learning experience for dental students but also emphasized the significance of community outreach in preventive dentistry.

This initiative reflects Hamdard Medical and Dental College’s continued commitment to oral health awareness, community service, and training of future dental professionals through real-world engagement.
