KARACHI: The Community And Preventive Dentistry Department of Bahria University Dental College (BUDC), under its Community Support Program (CSP), organized an oral health awareness and free dental check-up camp at the Pakistan School of Autism, Safoora Campus, aimed at promoting better oral hygiene practices for autistic children.

The initiative was supervised by Dr. Maria Moin, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department, and supported by Dr. Fatima Tasleem and Dr. Rabbia Imtiaz, along with House Officers Dr. Dua and Dr. Dureesham, and three third-year BDS students. The team arrived at the school at 9:30 a.m., where they were warmly welcomed by the school principal.

Comprehensive oral health screenings conducted

During the visit, oral examinations of 10 autistic children were carried out using WHO oral health assessment forms. Each child was accompanied by a parent or trainer to ensure comfort and a supportive environment throughout the examination. The screenings were performed under natural light, maintaining complete adherence to professional and ethical dental protocols.

Parents also participated in a Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) survey, helping the team better understand oral care awareness levels among caregivers of children with autism. Following the assessments, an interactive oral health education session was delivered to guide parents and trainers on effective daily hygiene routines and the importance of regular dental check-ups.

To reinforce healthy habits, toothbrushes and toothpaste were distributed to all children at the conclusion of the event, encouraging continued oral care at home.

Addressing oral health challenges an autism

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often face unique challenges in maintaining good oral hygiene due to sensory sensitivities, communication barriers, and difficulty adapting to routine dental practices. These factors may lead to increased risk of dental caries, gum disease, and oral discomfort.

Dr. Maria Moin emphasized that “inclusive and customized dental care can significantly improve the overall health, comfort, and quality of life for children with autism.” The project highlighted the essential link between oral health management and developmental wellbeing, advocating for dental environments and approaches that accommodate the specific needs of autistic individuals.

Promoting inclusive dental care through community outreach

The Community Support Program (CSP) continues to play a crucial role in bridging gaps in oral health accessibility for vulnerable populations. By organizing targeted awareness camps, it empowers both caregivers and dental professionals to understand the importance of preventive care for children with developmental conditions.

The event at Pakistan School of Autism not only enhanced oral health awareness but also reflected the department’s dedication to promoting inclusive dental care, public health education, and social responsibility among future dental professionals.
