When a mouth sore signals something serious

Most mouth ulcers heal in days, but persistent or recurring sores may be an early warning sign of oral cancer, experts warn.

Mouth sore or oral ulcer: when to seek medical advice

KARACHI: Mouth sores, also known as oral ulcers, are common and usually heal on their own within 7 to 14 days. According to Dr Deepak Rai, Consultant ENT Specialist at AKUH, most cases are triggered by stress, vitamin deficiencies, minor injuries, or infections. However, when ulcers linger, recur frequently, or are accompanied by other symptoms, they could point to something more serious — including oral cancer.

Warning signs that need medical attention

Dr Rai explains that certain symptoms should not be ignored:

  • Persistent or recurrent mouth ulcers lasting longer than two weeks
  • Difficulty swallowing or speaking
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Swelling or lumps in the neck

“These symptoms may indicate that a mouth sore is not just a simple ulcer but potentially something more serious. Early consultation can save lives,” Dr Rai said.

How ENT specialists can help

An ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) specialist can investigate the underlying causes of stubborn or recurring mouth sores. Depending on the case, further diagnostic tests such as a biopsy may be recommended to rule out oral cancer or other serious conditions.

Treatment plans can range from lifestyle and dietary changes to medications or surgical interventions, ensuring patients receive the right care tailored to their condition.

Prevention and oral health awareness

Experts highlight that maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding tobacco, managing stress, and ensuring adequate vitamin intake can help prevent many mouth ulcers. Still, the key lies in timely medical consultation.

“Mouth health often reflects the body’s overall condition. Do not ignore persistent sores — your mouth can reveal what your body is going through,” Dr Rai emphasized.
