Dentistry is changing beyond the traditional dental chair. For a growing generation of dental students and young professionals, the role of a dentist increasingly extends beyond treating problems to preventing them, educating communities and taking ownership of public oral health.
That approach was at the centre of the latest Smile Saviours Dental Camp organised recently by The DentEd Collective – Team Muhammad Medical College (MMC).
Held at The Citizens Foundation (TCF), Sophia Nathani Campus, Mirpurkhas, the initiative focused on preventive oral healthcare, dental awareness, early identification of dental problems and healthier daily oral hygiene habits.
But the significance of the initiative goes beyond a single dental camp.
It reflects a wider effort by DentEd to give dental students and young professionals opportunities to learn, lead and serve outside conventional academic and clinical environments.
When dental education moves beyond the classroom
For many people, oral healthcare begins when a tooth starts hurting.
Preventive dentistry aims to change that mindset by encouraging people to understand oral health before problems become serious enough to require treatment.
The Smile Saviours initiative brought that preventive message directly to participants through oral health awareness and education, with the team focusing on practical knowledge, early identification of dental concerns and healthier everyday habits.
The camp brought together dental students, young professionals, community partners and institutional representatives, creating a setting where oral health education was connected with real-world community engagement.
And while the message was about prevention, the initiative also offered something equally important to the next generation of dentists: an opportunity to lead.
Team MMC steps forward
The camp was led on the ground by Dr. Areeba Mallah, Campus Head – MMC, and Aniza Mari, Campus Ambassador – MMC, who coordinated the activity and represented The DentEd Collective at the campus level, They were supported by Muhammad Waqas Chattha, Muhammad Mustafa, and Urooj.
The team handled camp activities, participant engagement and oral health awareness efforts, helping translate DentEd’s broader vision into a campus-led initiative.
The model is significant because it places students and young professionals at the centre of community engagement rather than limiting their role to participation.
They were given an opportunity to organise, communicate, coordinate and deliver a preventive health message.
The people coordinating the bigger picture
The initiative also received support from members of The DentEd Collective’s Executive Council.
Muhammad Talha, Executive Member, and Ujala Khan, Joint Secretary, looked after the overall coordination and supervision of the camp.
Their involvement helped ensure that the activity remained aligned with DentEd’s outreach objectives while connecting the campus initiative with the organisation’s wider vision of building meaningful community programmes.
That broader network is becoming an important part of DentEd’s approach: enabling individual campus teams to identify opportunities, organise initiatives and contribute to the communities around their institutions.
Support from education, public service and professional circles
The Smile Saviours initiative was also attended by guests who encouraged and supported the team.
They included Dr. Doha Rajar, Lecturer, Muhammad Medical College; Mir Mustafa Gul, Inspector of Stamps, Board of Revenue Sindh; and Syed Wasay Shah.
Their participation highlighted the value of bringing together educational institutions, healthcare professionals, public representatives and young people around health-awareness initiatives.
Such collaboration can help community health programmes move beyond a purely academic exercise and become broader platforms for engagement and awareness.
From oral health awareness to practical action
One of the most tangible components of the initiative was the provision of oral hygiene kits with support from Colgate.
The kits reinforced the preventive message of the camp by giving participants practical oral hygiene resources to take home.
The DentEd Collective extended special appreciation to Mr. Ahmed Ali, Health Officer, for his support and coordination in facilitating the provision of the oral hygiene kits and contributing to the success of the initiative.
The addition of practical resources gave the awareness component a second dimension.
Instead of ending when participants left the camp, the preventive message could continue through their everyday oral hygiene routines.
DentEd’s bigger ambition is not limited to dental camps
The Smile Saviours initiative forms part of The DentEd Collective’s broader vision of creating a platform where dental students and young professionals can learn, lead, innovate, conduct research, develop professionally and contribute meaningfully to society.
