KARACHI: Students from Tharparkar have emerged among the highest performers in Sindh’s Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT), with five candidates from the district securing places in the province’s top 20, while 18 students from Karachi made it into the top 100.
The Tharparkar candidates placed among the top 20 scored between 176 and 179 marks out of 180, putting them among the strongest performers seeking admission to medical and dental colleges in Sindh.
The district’s performance extended beyond the top 20, with 12 Tharparkar students securing positions among the top 50 candidates, accounting for 24% of Sindh’s top 50 merit positions.
Karachi maintained significant representation across the wider merit rankings, placing seven candidates in the top 50, 18 in the top 100, 37 in the top 200, 111 in the top 500 and 210 in the top 1,000.
The figures highlight different patterns of high academic performance across Sindh, with Tharparkar producing a notable concentration of candidates at the very top of the merit list and Karachi contributing a much larger number of successful candidates across the broader rankings.
Tharparkar produces five of Sindh’s top 20 candidates
Tharparkar’s showing is particularly striking when viewed against the size of its candidate pool.
A total of 1,027 candidates from Tharparkar appeared in the MDCAT, of whom 613 passed, giving the district a reported pass rate of 59.7%.
Despite the relatively small number of candidates, the district placed five students in the top 20 and 12 among the top 50.
That concentration of high scores makes Tharparkar one of the most notable performers in this year’s Sindh MDCAT results.
Scores between 176 and 179 out of 180 also indicate how closely contested the top merit positions were, with only a handful of marks separating the province’s highest-ranked candidates.
Karachi places 18 students in top 100
Karachi, which had the largest candidate pool among the figures provided, recorded substantial representation across the upper merit tiers.
Of the 9,505 Karachi candidates who appeared, 5,492 passed the examination, resulting in a reported overall pass rate of 57.8%.
The city had:
• 7 candidates in the top 50
• 18 in the top 100
• 37 in the top 200
• 111 in the top 500
• 210 in the top 1,000

Within Karachi, Karachi East recorded a pass rate of 62%, while Karachi Central recorded 59.9%.
Nearly half of Sindh candidates qualify
Across Sindh, a total of 33,336 candidates appeared in the MDCAT, with 16,507 passing the examination.
This translates into an overall reported pass rate of approximately 49.5%.
The figures mean that slightly less than half of all candidates appearing across Sindh qualified under the reported passing criteria.
For MBBS admissions, the passing score was set at 99 marks out of 180.
Passing MDCAT, however, does not in itself guarantee admission to a medical or dental college.
Candidates must still compete under the applicable merit formula, available seat allocations and institutional admission procedures.
For students seeking highly competitive public-sector MBBS and BDS seats, even a small difference in marks can significantly alter final merit positions.
District-wise MDCAT results across Sindh
The results also show significant variation in candidate performance across different districts of the province.
In Larkana, 623 of 1,410 candidates passed the examination.
In Mirpurkhas, 571 of 1,262 candidates qualified.
Sukkur recorded 503 successful candidates out of 984, while Hyderabad had 652 successful candidates out of 1,611.
In Khairpur, 970 of 2,189 candidates passed.
Dadu recorded 669 successful candidates out of 1,441, while Shaheed Benazirabad saw 630 candidates qualify out of 1,485.
In Thatta, 181 of 398 candidates passed the test.
The district-level figures underline how participation, pass rates and top-rank representation vary considerably across Sindh.
Karachi East records 62% pass rate
Among the district-level pass percentages cited in the results, Karachi East recorded 62%, followed by Karachi Central at 59.9% and Tharparkar at 59.7%.
These numbers add an important dimension to the merit rankings.
Tharparkar’s distinction comes from its unusually high concentration of top-ranked candidates, while Karachi’s strength lies in its much larger number of successful candidates and broad representation across the upper merit bands.
The results therefore reflect more than one kind of academic success.
What makes Tharparkar’s performance noteworthy
Tharparkar’s presence among the highest-scoring candidates is significant because only 1,027 candidates from the district appeared in the test.
Yet the district produced:
five of Sindh’s top 20 candidates and 12 of the top 50.
That means almost one-quarter of the top 50 candidates came from Tharparkar.
Competition now shifts to MBBS and BDS admissions
With the MDCAT results announced, attention will now move to the admission process for MBBS and BDS programmes in public and private medical and dental colleges.
For thousands of successful candidates, the next crucial stage will be the calculation of final merit and the release of admission lists.
The number of students qualifying for MDCAT remains considerably larger than the number of highly sought-after seats available in many public-sector institutions, keeping competition intense even among candidates who have comfortably crossed the passing threshold.
