KARACHI: The Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry at Liaquat College of Medicine & Dentistry (LCMD) organized an impactful Oral Health Awareness and Assessment Camp at Al-Furqan Welfare Organization’s School, Branch 2, on October 21, 2025. The initiative aimed to promote oral health and hygiene among over 200 children from pre-primary to secondary levels through education, screening, and interactive learning.

The event was led by Dr. Anjum Fahad, Head of the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry, with active participation from faculty members Dr. Seema, Dr. Hassaan Sadiq, Dr. Mahnoor Abid, and Dr. Sara Maqbool. Second-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students also contributed enthusiastically, engaging children in fun, educational activities to raise awareness about oral care.

Promoting preventive oral care

The camp provided comprehensive dental screenings, identifying common oral health concerns such as cavities and gum disease. Each child underwent an individualized assessment, allowing the team to detect early signs of dental issues and recommend preventive measures.

To explore the link between nutrition and oral health, participants also completed a standardized dietary questionnaire assessing their consumption of sugary foods and overall dietary quality. The findings highlighted the strong correlation between balanced nutrition, healthy gums, and stronger teeth.

Empowering children with healthy habits

Every child received a personalized oral health kit containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, and educational leaflets emphasizing proper brushing techniques and diet-related dental care. The second-year BDS students played a key role in preparing these materials and leading awareness sessions tailored to different age groups.

Through engaging discussions, students encouraged the children to adopt healthy oral hygiene habits, brush twice daily, and limit sugary snacks. This hands-on outreach experience not only empowered the children but also enhanced the students’ practical understanding of community dentistry and preventive oral healthcare.

Building responsibility through community service

The initiative reinforced LCMD’s commitment to community engagement and public health education. It also provided invaluable real-world learning opportunities for dental students, strengthening their sense of social responsibility and understanding of preventive dentistry’s role in long-term health.

By combining research, education, and compassion, the event demonstrated how community-based oral health programs can make a tangible difference in promoting wellness and building healthier communities.
