KARACHI: Between lectures, clinical training and examination preparation, opportunities for students to unwind and connect with their peers can offer a welcome change of pace. For second-year dental students at Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine (AIDM), a recreational outing to Bahria Town Adventure Land in Karachi provided just such an opportunity, bringing students and faculty together for a day away from their usual academic routines.

Organised by the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry, the outing combined entertainment, group activities and informal interaction in an environment designed to encourage students and teachers to connect beyond the classroom.

The trip was held under the supervision of Dr. Amir Akbar Shaikh, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry. Prof. Dr. Sheema Farhan, Vice Principal of Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine, also joined the outing, along with senior faculty members Dr. Sobia and Dr. Rafia.

Junior faculty members Dr. Fatima Jafri, Dr. Nikita Bodani, Dr. Danial Ahmed, Dr. Jannat Arif, Dr. Anum Ilyas, Dr. Zain Jabbar and Dr. Mahnoor Shafiq accompanied the students, contributing to an atmosphere of shared participation and informal engagement.

At Adventure Land, students enjoyed amusement rides, games and group activities, creating opportunities to strengthen friendships and share experiences outside their academic setting. Faculty members also took part in the day's activities, helping create a relaxed atmosphere in which students and teachers could interact beyond their usual classroom and clinical roles.

For students approaching the examination season, the outing also offered a chance to take a break from academic demands. One student described the experience as an opportunity to relax, interact with classmates and recharge ahead of the examinations.

The programme concluded with a group lunch and photography session, bringing participants together to mark the occasion and capture memories of the day.

Although dental education is centred on scientific knowledge, clinical competence and patient care, student life also involves building relationships, developing communication skills and learning to work with others. Informal activities can provide opportunities for these connections to grow, complementing the structured learning that takes place in classrooms and clinical settings.

Through the outing, the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry brought students and faculty together in a setting that encouraged recreation, social interaction and a sense of community within the institution.

The initiative reflected the department's interest in supporting student engagement alongside academic development, offering second-year BDS students a shared experience as they continued their dental education and prepared for the demands of the examination season.
