HYDERABAD: Dental education does not end with mastering clinical procedures or passing examinations. For young dentists, the ability to assess a patient's medical history, document treatment decisions, obtain informed consent and navigate the realities of professional life can be just as important as technical knowledge.

These issues took centre stage at DentEd DentaCon 2026, where scientific sessions brought experienced dental academics and clinicians together to discuss the practical responsibilities and professional challenges that students and early-career practitioners must prepare to face.

Organised by The DentEd Collective, the event was held under the theme “Resetting How We Create, Learn and Innovate — Ctrl + Alt + Dentistry.”

The scientific programme addressed three interconnected areas of dental practice: clinical decision-making before treatment, the medico-legal responsibilities that accompany patient care, and the lessons that extend beyond the formal dental curriculum.

Rather than focusing solely on technical knowledge, the sessions encouraged participants to consider how clinical judgement, professional accountability, communication and personal development influence their transition from dental school to practice.

Prof Kashif Ikram highlights the importance of a complete patient history

Prof. Dr. Kashif Ikram, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Baqai Medical University, Karachi, and Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, delivered a session titled “Before You Treat: The Clinical Power of a Complete Patient History.”

His session focused on an essential step in patient care that can have far-reaching implications for diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical safety: obtaining a thorough medical and dental history before beginning treatment.

A patient's underlying medical conditions, current medications, known allergies and previous dental treatment can all influence clinical decisions. Understanding these factors helps dental professionals assess potential risks and determine an appropriate course of care.

The session highlighted the importance of approaching patient assessment systematically rather than treating the presenting dental complaint in isolation.

For students preparing to enter clinical practice, the subject reinforced a fundamental principle of dentistry: sound treatment decisions begin with understanding the patient, not simply identifying the dental problem.

Dr Faizan addresses consent, clinical records and medico-legal responsibilities

Dr. Syed M. Faizan, an implantologist with BDS, MSc and DICOI qualifications and Director of Vanguard Dental Clinic and Vanguard Dental School, delivered a session titled “Consent, Records and Risk: The Medico-Legal Reality of Dental Practice.”

The session examined the responsibilities that accompany the provision of dental care, particularly informed consent, appropriate clinical documentation and the maintenance of accurate patient records.

These areas are central to responsible practice because they help establish what information was communicated to a patient, what decisions were made and how treatment was planned and documented.

Informed consent requires more than obtaining a patient's signature. It involves communicating relevant information about proposed treatment, its potential risks and benefits, and available alternatives in a manner the patient can understand.

Similarly, accurate clinical records support continuity of care and provide a reliable account of assessments, discussions, decisions and treatment delivered.

By bringing these responsibilities into focus, the session addressed an aspect of professional development that dental graduates must understand alongside their clinical training. Competence in dentistry involves not only performing procedures but also communicating clearly, documenting appropriately and recognising the professional obligations attached to patient care.

Prof Salman Shafique explores lessons dental school cannot teach alone

Prof. Dr. Salman Shafique, Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dean of Isra Dental College, Hyderabad, delivered a session titled “The Unwritten Curriculum: What Dental School Never Teaches You.”

His presentation explored the knowledge, habits and interpersonal skills that shape a dentist's professional development but cannot always be acquired through textbooks, examinations or formal clinical instruction alone.

The discussion covered communication, mentorship, resilience, professional conduct, decision-making and the practical realities of building a career after graduation.

These considerations become increasingly important as young dentists move from supervised academic environments into professional settings, where they must communicate with patients and colleagues, make decisions under real-world constraints and take greater responsibility for their work.

Mentorship and professional relationships can also help early-career practitioners navigate unfamiliar situations, develop confidence and recognise areas in which further learning is needed.

The session broadened the conversation about dental education by examining the personal and professional qualities that complement technical competence. It also highlighted the importance of preparing students for the wider demands of a career in dentistry, rather than viewing graduation as the final milestone in their development.

DentaCon connects clinical knowledge with professional readiness

Taken together, the three sessions addressed different but closely related dimensions of dental practice.

Patient history-taking focused on the information needed to make informed clinical decisions. The medico-legal session examined the responsibilities involved in communicating with patients and maintaining appropriate records. The discussion on the unwritten curriculum considered the interpersonal skills, professional judgement and resilience required to navigate a career beyond formal education.

For dental students and young practitioners, these subjects offer a practical framework for understanding the transition from academic learning to professional responsibility.

The programme also reflected DentaCon's wider emphasis on rethinking how dental professionals learn, communicate and develop their skills. The event's announced programme included research communication, electronic poster presentations and short-form digital communication competitions, alongside educational sessions and opportunities for professional interaction.

By bringing clinical, academic and professional perspectives into the same programme, DentaCon 2026 provided a platform for discussing the demands of contemporary dental practice beyond the boundaries of the classroom.

The sessions underscored a broader message for emerging dental professionals: building a successful career requires more than clinical knowledge. It also calls for careful judgement, ethical conduct, clear communication and a willingness to continue learning throughout professional life.
