KARACHI: Second-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students at Hamdard University Dental Hospital (HUDH) showcased their research ideas, analytical skills and scientific curiosity at the institution’s Research Synopsis Presentation Competition, an academic initiative aimed at introducing undergraduate dental students to research and evidence-based practice early in their training.

Organised by the Department of Community Dentistry, the competition gave students a structured opportunity to present research proposals and develop skills in critical thinking, study design and scientific communication. The initiative reflects HUDH’s focus on strengthening the research foundations of future dental professionals.

The department is led by Head of Department Syed Muzammil Ali Shah. The competition was organised alongside Undergraduate Research Advisor and Supervisor and Vice Principal Dr. Saima Asim, Dr. Shikoh Naz and Rauf Hassan.

A panel of senior academic evaluators assessed the students’ research proposals. The judges included Prof. Dr. Syed Imran Hasan, Principal of Hamdard University Dental Hospital; Prof. Hasan Shahid, Head of the Department of Community Dentistry at Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU); and Prof. Syed Mohd Mubeen, Vice Principal of Hamdard College of Medicine and Dentistry (HCM&D).

The panel commended the participants for their analytical depth and collaborative execution, recognising the academic effort involved in developing and presenting their proposals.

Tooth Titans secure first position

Following the evaluation, Tooth Titans secured first position in the competition, while Gleam Gladiators finished second and Dental Dynamics took third place.

Two additional teams, Wisdom Warriors and Dental Defenders, received recognition as runners-up.

The results highlighted the participation of multiple student teams in an academic exercise that required them to develop research ideas and communicate them to an expert panel.

Building research skills early in dental education

Research synopsis presentations offer undergraduate students an opportunity to organise a research question, consider an appropriate study design and explain the scientific basis of a proposed investigation. These skills can help students engage more critically with dental literature and understand how research findings inform clinical decisions.

Introducing research methodology during the early stages of dental education can also help students appreciate the role of scientific evidence in evaluating preventive approaches, understanding oral diseases and improving patient care.

For community dentistry in particular, research can help future practitioners examine oral-health needs, identify gaps in awareness and access, and assess preventive interventions. The competition provided a platform for students to begin developing the analytical and communication skills needed for such work.

HUDH’s initiative places undergraduate research within the broader goal of promoting evidence-based dentistry and academic development. By giving students an opportunity to present proposals and receive feedback from experienced academics, the institution is helping them engage with research as part of their professional education.

The competition also brought together faculty and academic representatives from dental and medical education institutions, giving the event an evaluative dimension beyond the student presentations themselves.

As dental education increasingly emphasises the integration of clinical knowledge, scientific evidence and critical thinking, opportunities to develop research skills during undergraduate training can help prepare students for continued academic inquiry and more informed professional practice.
