HYDERABAD: Bringing dental education closer to the community, Muskan Zindagi, under the leadership of Syed Kazim Raza Shah, Director – Health & Wellbeing, organised a Dental Health & Hygiene Camp at Mehran International School, Hyderabad, combining basic dental screening, oral health education and interactive learning for schoolchildren.
Held in collaboration with Colgate Pakistan, the initiative brought together 160 students and approximately 20–22 teaching staff members, creating a community-based setting in which preventive oral healthcare could be introduced through both professional screening and practical health education.
Connecting dental education with community care
A key component of the initiative was the participation of eight fourth-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students from Isra University, who supported the dental screening and basic check-ups alongside Muskan Zindagi volunteers.
Their involvement gave the programme an educational and community-service dimension, connecting undergraduate dental education with direct engagement in a school environment. The activity provided the students an opportunity to contribute to oral health awareness while supporting basic screening activities for schoolchildren.
The screening was complemented by discussions designed to help students understand the importance of regular dental care and maintaining good oral hygiene.
Making preventive oral health education practical
Following the screening, students participated in an interactive discussion focused on oral health and hygiene.
The session centred on practical awareness about dental care and encouraged students to develop healthier oral hygiene habits. Rather than limiting the programme to screening, the initiative placed emphasis on helping children understand the everyday practices that contribute to maintaining oral health.
A colouring activity was also conducted to make the learning experience more engaging and accessible for the students.
The combination of screening, discussion and activity-based learning allowed the programme to approach oral health from both a preventive and educational perspective.
Turning awareness into practical support
The collaboration with Colgate Pakistan also provided a practical component to the oral health initiative.
As part of the collaboration, Colgate Pakistan provided 200 toothpaste samples for distribution among participants. The contribution complemented the awareness activities by providing practical oral hygiene support alongside the information shared during the programme.
The initiative therefore brought together three elements of community-based preventive care: basic dental screening, oral health education and practical hygiene support.
School partnership strengthens community outreach
Mehran International School, Hyderabad, hosted the programme, with Zehra Malkani, Principal, facilitating the team throughout the session and supporting coordination of the activities.
Her cooperation helped ensure that the different components of the initiative, including student engagement, screening and educational activities, were carried out smoothly.
The wider Muskan Zindagi team also contributed to the planning and implementation of the programme.
Areesha Khursheed, President, provided leadership, guidance and continuous support throughout the planning and execution of the initiative.
Ali Raza, Facilitator, helped coordinate the workflow and supported the smooth implementation of the day's activities.
Dr. Areej established the connection with the school principal and helped facilitate the opportunity for Muskan Zindagi to conduct the community dental health programme at the school.
Documenting community dental outreach
Areeba Kanwal, Associate, Media & Marketing, was responsible for the programme's media documentation, capturing photographs and videos throughout the initiative to document the activities and support Muskan Zindagi's communications and outreach.
Muskan Zindagi volunteers also provided on-ground support, assisting with coordination, student engagement and the implementation of the different activities conducted during the programme.
Strengthening preventive dentistry through community engagement
The initiative reflects a model of community-based oral health promotion in which dental education extends beyond conventional clinical settings and into schools, where children can be introduced to preventive dental care and healthier hygiene practices at an early stage.
By bringing together Muskan Zindagi, Isra University BDS students, Colgate Pakistan and Mehran International School, the programme connected dental education with community service while giving schoolchildren access to basic screening and practical oral health awareness.
The participation of dental students, school staff, volunteers and community partners also demonstrated how collaborative outreach can support preventive oral healthcare while giving future dental professionals an opportunity to engage with communities outside the clinical environment.
