KARACHI: Periodontology residents and house officers at Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine (AIDM) gained an inside look at the modern digital workflow behind implant prosthodontics during an educational visit to Innovative Dental Laboratory, where they followed the journey of an implant case from clinical records to the fabrication of the final prosthesis.
The educational visit was organized by the Department of Periodontology at Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine on the special request of Dr. Zaheer Hussain Chachar, Head of the Department of Periodontology, with the objective of helping trainees better understand what happens beyond the clinical setting once an implant case moves into the prosthetic fabrication stage.
Rather than focusing only on implant treatment at chairside, the visit exposed the trainees to the laboratory processes that translate clinical information into a definitive implant prosthesis.
Trainees follow the implant case from impressions to final prosthesis
One of the key learning opportunities was the ability to observe the complete journey of an implant case, beginning with conventional impressions and progressing to intraoral scanning, digital designing and computer-aided manufacturing.
The laboratory team demonstrated how different forms of clinical information are incorporated into the prosthetic workflow, allowing the trainees to see how conventional and digital techniques connect within contemporary implant dentistry.
The process extended through CAD/CAM-based fabrication and ultimately to the final prosthesis that is delivered to the clinician for clinical placement.
For periodontology trainees, seeing this sequence in a working laboratory environment offered a different perspective on implant treatment—one that connected clinical implant planning with the technical stages required to produce the prosthetic restoration.
Why communication matters in implant prosthodontics
The visit also highlighted an aspect of implant treatment that can be less visible during routine clinical training: the importance of communication and collaboration among the periodontist, restorative dentist, dental laboratory and dental technician.
The laboratory team explained the different stages of the digital workflow and emphasized how coordination among the clinical and laboratory teams contributes to predictable implant prosthetic outcomes.
For trainees, this provided practical insight into how treatment planning does not end with implant placement or the clinical appointment. The information generated during treatment must ultimately translate into an accurately designed and fabricated prosthesis that meets the clinical requirements of the case.
Digital dentistry brings new skills into periodontal training
The educational exposure also introduced the residents and house officers to the expanding role of digital dentistry, intraoral scanning, CAD/CAM technology and digital implant prosthetic workflows in contemporary clinical practice.
As digital tools become increasingly integrated into dental laboratories and implant prosthodontics, understanding the relationship between clinical treatment planning and laboratory-based digital fabrication is becoming an important component of modern dental education.
The visit therefore provided trainees with practical exposure to technology and processes that complement their clinical training, while helping them understand how digital workflows can connect different stages of implant prosthetic treatment.
A learning experience beyond the dental chair
The visit to Innovative Dental Laboratory gave AIDM's periodontology residents and house officers an opportunity to see the technical side of implant prosthodontics first-hand and to better appreciate the collaborative process involved in delivering a final implant restoration.
The experience underscored the educational value of taking postgraduate dental training beyond the conventional clinical environment and exposing trainees to the laboratory technologies that increasingly support contemporary implant care.
The Department of Periodontology extended special thanks to Mr. Asif Asrar and the entire team at Innovative Dental Laboratory for their excellent arrangements, hospitality and support in facilitating the educational experience.
Such academic and hands-on initiatives can strengthen the clinical and technological understanding of residents and house officers by connecting theoretical knowledge, clinical treatment planning and the laboratory processes involved in modern dental practice.
